Laparoscopic surgery has revolutionized surgical field since 1991. It is also known as ‘Minimally invasive surgery’.

Laparoscopy:

Laparoscopy is not a different procedure. Rather it is a difference in approach to the same procedure being done open. With an open procedure we make a large incision on the abdomen, cut through the skin, fat and muscle to enter inside the abdomen. Then we do the procedure under direct vision using regular instruments and hands. When the procedure is complete we close all the tissue layers that we had to cut through.

With a laparoscopic procedure instead of making the big cut a tiny incision is made (Your little finger may fit through the incision). A specially designed video camera is inserted through this little opening into the abdominal cavity. The camera then shows an image on a TV monitor. So we can see the inside of the abdominal cavity on a TV monitor without making a large incision for it. Then 4 or 5 separate small incisions are made elsewhere in the abdomen. Through these incisions specially designed instruments are placed and the exact surgical procedure as we do it open is performed by looking at the TV monitor and using the special instruments. Therefore what we do inside does not change but how we approach it changes.

Comparison:

Because we did the same procedure on the inside there is no difference between Laparoscopy or open in terms of weight loss or complications related to the inside such as leak, internal bleeding or internal injuries.

However, incision related complications are far less in laparoscopy compared with open surgery and the recovery is shorter and easier with the laparoscopic approach.

Laparoscopy therefore is preferred at AIBL and over 97% of our patients underwent laparoscopic surgery.
